Turn local knowledge into trusted coverage
Community mapping helps residents preserve and share knowledge about homes, landmarks, services, businesses, transport points, and shared facilities that formal maps may miss.
Alkax's Light Up Africa experience makes that work visible: contributors complete nearby missions, verified addresses illuminate coverage cells, and local or team campaigns advance together.

Community missions turn uncovered areas into trusted, reusable place coverage as independent verification catches up with capture.
The situation
Important places may be obvious to residents but absent from formal maps or described differently by different groups. A mapping programme needs to capture that knowledge without creating a second problem: duplicated, unsafe, or low-quality data.
The strongest programme rewards usefulness, not raw submission volume. A newly created address therefore remains pending for progression until another contributor independently confirms it.
A quality-gated mapping loop
- Define the locality, campaign goal, and kinds of places that are genuinely useful.
- Brief contributors on accurate pins, stable landmarks, photo consent, duplicate handling, and sensitive locations.
- Use nearby missions to find unverified places or incomplete records.
- Capture missing places with local names, categories, landmarks, and useful arrival details.
- Continue offline when connectivity is unavailable; sync the queue later.
- Ask a different contributor with local knowledge to verify the record.
- Watch trusted coverage, the weekly locality challenge, and campaign progress grow.
- Flag or correct records that are duplicated, unsafe, misleading, or no longer accurate.
A place contributes to illuminated coverage and validated campaign progress only after an independent upvote. Self-verification does not qualify.
Coordinate through campaigns
Campaigns can organise community, university, or partner teams around a locality or goal. Contributors should join a campaign before doing the work they want counted.
Use campaign progress to answer practical questions:
- Which neighbourhoods still have weak trusted coverage?
- Are contributors creating useful records or only adding volume?
- Where is independent review falling behind capture?
- Which team needs a clearer briefing on quality and safety?
Sponsored campaigns can include recognition, Pro time, airtime, or data rewards. Cash-equivalent rewards remain subject to manual review, and invalidated work can block or reverse eligibility.
Recognition without the wrong incentives
Alkax separates two kinds of progression:
- Impact recognises validated addresses and accurate independent verification.
- Trust reflects independent verification work on other contributors' places.
Raw submissions and community posts do not earn mapping Impact Points. This makes leaderboards and campaign progress more resistant to spam and keeps recognition aligned with places that remain useful.
Quality principles
- Prefer stable, visible landmarks over directions based on temporary objects.
- Place the pin where a visitor should arrive.
- Resolve duplicate warnings rather than forcing another record.
- Do not expose private household details without a clear reason and consent.
- Never map sensitive facilities publicly merely to increase coverage.
- Verify only when you can assess the place from reliable local knowledge.
- Treat community verification as evidence of local confidence, not legal certification.
- Expect progress or rewards to be recomputed when qualifying work is hidden, removed, or placed under review.
